Plot Summary

The story of Kaya Taran revolves around two characters who are affected by the communal riots that took place in Gujarat in 2002. One is Sister Agatha (Seema Biswas), a nun who runs an orphanage in a small town in Kerala. She was born as Tara, a Hindu girl, but converted to Christianity after witnessing the horrors of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi. She still suffers from nightmares and flashbacks of the violence she saw as a child.

The other is Saket Ram (Angad Bedi), a young journalist who comes to Kerala to cover the story of a Hindu girl who eloped with a Muslim boy and was killed by her family in an honor killing. He is also haunted by the memories of the Gujarat riots, where he lost his wife and unborn child in a brutal attack by a mob. He is cynical and bitter about the state of the country and the role of religion in politics.

When Saket Ram arrives at Sister Agatha's orphanage, he is intrigued by her calm and compassionate demeanor. He learns about her past and her conversion to Christianity. He also meets some of the children who live in the orphanage, who come from different religious backgrounds and have been orphaned or abandoned by their families. He begins to develop a bond with Sister Agatha and the children, and starts to question his own beliefs and prejudices.

However, their peaceful world is shattered when a group of Hindu extremists attack the orphanage, accusing Sister Agatha of converting the children to Christianity. They set fire to the building and try to kill Sister Agatha and the children. Saket Ram tries to save them, but he is outnumbered and overpowered by the mob. He watches helplessly as Sister Agatha and the children are burned alive in front of his eyes.

The movie ends with a voice-over by Saket Ram, who says that he has lost everything he cared about, and that he has no hope for the future of India. He says that he wishes he could have been like Sister Agatha, who had found peace and love in her faith, and who had given hope and happiness to the children. He says that he will never forget her or the children, and that they will always live in his heart.
