In December 2021, EPA finalized revised national greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions standards for passenger cars and light trucks for Model Years 2023- 2026. The final standards would achieve significant GHG emissions reductions along with reductions in other criteria pollutants. The rule would result in substantial public health and welfare benefits, while providing consumers with savings from lower fuel costs.

Our annual awards cut through the crowded market of more than 300 cars, trucks, SUVs, and vans to find the 10 that live up to their purpose while delivering incredible value and a great driving experience.

Our test vehicles included sedans, hatchbacks, SUVs, and pickup trucks. For hitch racks, we used vehicles with 2-inch hitch receivers, and we tried each roof rack on four sets of crossbars, including the factory bars on our Toyota RAV4 test vehicle as well as on a Thule AeroBlade Edge system and a Yakima JetStream system.

All heavy-duty Chevrolet Silverados and GMC Sierras will be built in Flint, Michigan, only. Light-duty Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra regular cabs are produced in Mexico only. Vehicles marked with a double asterisk (**) are the crew cab versions of the Chevrolet Silverado light-duty and GMC Sierra light-duty trucks. Those are assembled by UAW members in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and also in Mexico.

Despite historically representing a tiny fraction of the US car market, diesel cars and trucks have been popular in the rest of the world for decades and are a growing segment of the US car market. If you're wondering if diesel trucks or cars are worth it, consider the pros and cons of diesel cars and trucks.

Longevity. Diesel engines are extraordinarily reliable and tend to last a very long time. In fact, several cars holding records for high mileage have diesel engines, like the famous Mercedes-Benz 240D that logged almost 3 million miles before being retired. Diesel engine longevity is primarily due to two factors. The engines are built more durably to handle the compression force of the ignition cycle, and the fuel itself is an oil that gently lubricates the engine as it runs.

Efficiency. Though diesel cars and trucks may cost more upfront, they're often worth it in the long run. Diesel is a richer source of usable energy than gasoline. According to the Department of Energy, diesel motors typically get as much as 35% more miles to the gallon.

Lower CO2 emissions. There's some debate about the environmental impact of diesel compared to gasoline-powered cars, but modern diesel vehicles produce less CO2 per gallon of fuel than comparable gasoline-powered engines.

Slower depreciation. According to a study by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute, diesel cars and trucks depreciate much more slowly than their gasoline counterparts.

That depends on what kind of driver you are and how you drive most of the time. Diesel is a great choice for working vehicles that log many long trips on the highway or frequently need to pull big loads. Because of that, diesel trucks are often worth it, and diesel cars can be worth it for those who frequently travel long distances. Drivers who keep the same vehicle for a long time may benefit from diesel more than those who prefer to change cars after five years or less.

If you're mostly driving in the city, making short trips at relatively low speeds, you're less likely to reap significant benefits from a diesel engine. However, you may still appreciate their reliability and fuel economy. If you're looking for a sporty ride or love performance driving, there are some options available, but you may find gasoline-powered cars a better fit.

By using lightweight structural materials, cars can carry additional advanced emission control systems, safety devices, and integrated electronic systems without increasing the overall weight of the vehicle. While any vehicle can use lightweight materials, they are especially important for hybrid electric, plug-in hybrid electric, and electric vehicles. Using lightweight materials in these vehicles can offset the weight of power systems such as batteries and electric motors, improving the efficiency and increasing their all-electric range. Alternatively, the use of lightweight materials could result in needing a smaller and lower cost battery while keeping the all-electric range of plug-in vehicles constant.

Orchestrated engine noise has become a necessity for electric cars, which run so quietly that they can provide a dangerous surprise for inattentive pedestrians and the blind. Federal safety officials expect to finalize rules later this year requiring all hybrid and electric cars to play fake engine sounds to alert passersby, a change that experts estimate could prevent thousands of pedestrian and cyclist injuries.

Electric cars and trucks use electricity as fuel, producing fewer emissions than their conventional counterparts. When the electricity comes from renewable sources, all-electric vehicles produce zero emissions to drive.

Maybe not. Our research on consumer behavior and the environmental impacts of automotive transportation leads us to expect that the transition to electric cars, trucks and ships will be dramatically harder that it sounds.

The roughly 250 million cars, SUVs and pickup trucks on U.S. roads today account for 60% of transportation emissions. The 11.5 million big trucks that move freight around generate another 23% and aircraft are responsible for 9% of those greenhouse gas emissions.

The used cars and trucks index, a component of the private transportation index, is included in the transportation group of the Consumer Price Index (CPI). The used cars and trucks index is published monthly at the U.S., regional, and area level.

The used cars and trucks index is comprised of used vehicles that are between 2 and 7 years of age. Subcompact, compact or sporty, intermediate, full, and luxury cars are all included in the index. Light trucks in the index include pickup trucks, vans, and specialty vehicles like sport/cross utility vehicles.

The CPI does not collect price information on used cars and trucks ourselves; all price information for used cars and trucks used in the CPI comes from JDPIN. All prices are adjusted for depreciation of the vehicle.
